The Captive Queen - Alison Weir

About Eleanor of Aquitaine, set in the high middle ages. It's a bit more 'naughty' than the norm for these books (a few times I have hoped that other people on the train aren't reading over my shoulder!) but while it seemed a bit like a Mills and Boon initially I now see the relevance as a way to illustrate the marked decline in her marriage to Henry Plantagenet.

And am enjoying reading about someone I had known nothing about, while I realise historical novels are 'enhanced' I do think they make history more digestible and Alison Weir is a noted historian who writes factual books as well as novels.

According to my Kindle I'm 47% of the way through and following a quick Wikipedia search I have lots to look forward to!

Help Required!

We have been invited to a birthday party, not any birthday party but a 60th birthday party of a 1940's enthusiast!

While period attire isn't essential we would really like to make an effort for her!

I know some of you lovely ladies have been known to dress in 1940's style now and again and was hoping you could point me in the right direction!

With nothing to watch over the weekend, James and I turned to Sky Anytime and popped this on, not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised at this modern day 'Beauty and the Beast' and James even conceded that it was 'pretty good'

Now That's What I Call Keeping Calm.......

It's been a week since my last post here and what a week!

Just before Sophie was due to return to nursery after the New Year weekend we received an e-mail to say that the nursery had been vandalised, someone had set a fire that, while caught in time, had caused extensive smoke damage ruining the entire contents (including ceilings, walls and insulation) of the building! As a result the nursery had to be closed for repair and to replace everything inside meaning we have had to juggle looking after Sophie and working our shifts too! (no mean feat I can tell you!)

Luckily the fabulous owners and staff have worked really hard (along with an army of cleaners, builders and decorators) and organised a minor miracle of having the entire nursery ready for our babies in just 9 days!

I can't wait to see the place this morning!

I'll be taking this with me, a little gift from Sophie to show her appreciation of all their hard work and a little reminder of all they have achieved!

I am still shocked that someone saw fit to do something like this to a children's nursery, I am just happy that no one was inside!

The Great British Bake Off?

I was very flattered last week when I came into work to find this had been left on my desk by a colleague!

Its good to know that he enjoys my cupcakes and biscuits (or that he wants to get rid of me again!), but after watching this years series I don't think I'd even know where to start with some of the challenges!

These Shoes are Made for Walking.......

Sophie's first shoes, that is!

I've never put shoes on her before (apart from some bootes when it was really cold) as I've not wanted to damage her feet but on a recent shopping trip at Mothercare we decided to pop into the Clarks consession and get her feet measured and get some advice.

The staff were great and we came away with a cute pair of cruisers in a tiny 3G and an introductory pack including a framed photo of her in the store and a height chart!

She seems to like them!

If she takes after Mummy they will be the first of many!!!

You are in the right place and I hope you like the new look? I was getting tired of the old style layout and got quite excited when I realised how much had changed with blogger since my last revamp!

I love these glass tree ornaments available from Ikea!

They go perfectly with my 'Christmas look!' (check out my 'Christmas house' here and here)

I'm so excited at the prospect of decorating this year. Not only is it Sophie's first Christmas but I never got my beautiful decorations out last year due to being so heavily pregnant!

From the reaction we got when we decorated for Halloween this year I think Sophie is going to love Christmas as much as Mummy!

I'm loving these fab shopping bags available from 'The Good Bag Co.' not only because they are fair trade, environmentally friendly and really reasonably priced but because they are available in absolutely tonnes of fun designs!

I was really struggling finding unusual Christmas gifts for Sophie's Nursery Nurses. They have been fantastic and I wanted to get a thoughtful present to show how much we appreciate them.

Imagine my delight when I spyed these!

I also wanted to get a collective present for the staff but didn't want to buy the normal box of biscuits.

This bag filled with Christmas tea, coffee, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and a few other goodies should make a perfect gift for them to enjoy in the weeks running up to Christmas!

I hope they like them!!!

I am very excited about Cath Kidston's new Christmas card and wrap range, so much so that on a recent visit to Bluewater shopping centre I couldn't help but find a few items placed lovingly into my basket!

Loving these retro cards, reserved for 'special' people that will fully appreciate their gorgeousness!

I've decided that this year's theme will be brown paper wrapping with colourful ribbons, tags and stickers Cath style!

I cant wait to get wrapping!

A Balanced Diet.....

Is a cookie in each hand!

As well as Blogging, I have decided to use some of my baby free time to indulge in a bit of baking. I have several lovely baking books that I haven't so much as looked at let alone actually tried any of the recipes!

First on my list was the 'Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook'.

I had a quick look though and found lots of things I want to try but settled on the 'Nutella Shortbread Sandwich Cookies' I always seem to bake cupcakes or make large celebration cakes and wanted to try something different. They were really easy and only use a few ingredients, one of which is Nutella, Bonus!

Here is the recipe if you want to try them for yourself!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup hazelnuts

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 c. cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Pinch of salt

1/2 jar Nutella

Preheat oven to 180C . Grease two sheet pans or line with parchment (or Silpat).

Toast and skin the hazelnuts. In a food processor, pulse the hazelnuts with the sugar until they are finely ground. Add the flour and pulse again. Add the butter pieces, and process it until the mixture comes together. Turn out onto a work surface.

Roll out dough to approximately 1/8-in. thickness (this is quite delicate and tore easily so make sure you are well floured!). With any shape cookie cutter, cut out cookies and transfer the cookies to the prepared sheet pans.

Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes, depending on their size and thickness. Cool the cookies on the sheet pans. (these are really easy to overbake, they are ready when slightly golden at the edges, I overbaked mine!)

Once cooled: spread the Nutella on one cookie and make a sandwich by topping the Nutella with another cookie.

Yummy!

Lets just say they didnt last long and I'll be making them again!

I even made a special super cookie for James!

I don't normally make a point of watching 'I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here' but after catching the first show and seeing fellow Essex dweller Mark Wright enter the jungle I have to admit to a sneaky series link on the old Sky Plus!

Any TOWIE viewers will know Mr Wright hasn't always been portrayed in the best light but as far as I have seen he has conducted himself really well!

Oh and he is very good looking!

Hi Ho, Hi Ho........

It's back to work I go!

Well its been about a month, and we seem to be getting settled into what would pass as a routine, or as close to one as we can get with us both working shifts!

Its been horrible leaving Sophie, but she is genuinely loving nursery now and is really benefiting from being with the other children. We love that we can get things done in half the time and when we pick her up we can devote our attention and time to her without worrying about the pile of washing or errands that we need to run!

For me its been a bit more difficult, there is lots of new equipment I need to be trained on, permits and licenses to renew and generally brushing up on my duties (not an easy prospect when the most brain taxing thing I've done for the past year is watch Micky Mouse Clubhouse!)

On a positive, though, it means I get a little 'Me time' that I plan to use to get my blogging head on again. I have missed keeping up to date with what's going on in blogsville and can't wait to have a good read!

Keeping In Touch......

Where has the time gone?
Sophie is 8 months old now and doing really well!
I have finally come to accept that while I am home looking after her I am just not going to find the time to blog and comment as much as I would like!
I also accept I have very little to blog about when sometimes the highlight of my day is a particularly comical nappy and when we do something blog worthy (which of course we do!) there is no time to tell you about it or its so long after the event it feels pointless!

All that is to change soon though..................I have to go back to work!

While I'm devastated at the thought of leaving my precious little girl at nursery while I head of to work I know that for now, that is what I'm going to have to do. My head tells me she will enjoy the time with other children and my shift work means we will still get to spent lots of time together but my heart is screaming that she is too little and I'll never get this time back.
I guess I'm just not ready for the next stage!
With that in mind I decided to take the opportunity to complete a few 'keeping in touch days' at work.

KIT days seemed a good Idea to enable me to put a few things in motion for my return and get to grips with leaving Sophie for a few hours without having a nervous breakdown!

I hate leaving the house in the morning, knowing I'm not going to be there when she wakes up and miss her all day but I have surprised myself at how productive I feel when I don't have a small person around!
I'm not quite as scared about returning to work as I was before and the smiles I get when I get home make it all worth it!!!

Baking Nut (peanut that is!)

Yesterday I got a rare chance to do a spot of baking!

A work friend of my Mum's is getting married this Saturday and her colleagues wanted to give her a little party on her last day at work as a single girl! They decided that they would all bring in something they had baked and have a little surprise tea party for her! Apparently everyone made a valiant effort! Even the one guy, Peter, who impressed everyone with his Cornflake Cakes and Mexican Wedding Cookies!

Mum asked me to make something if I had time so I took the opportunity to knock up a batch of Peanut Butter Crinkles (with an added kiss!) These are super yummy and take about 20 minutes to make and bake so even I had time to make some!!!

I thought I'd share the recipe so you can try them for yourself!

(makes 20-25 cookies)

6 tbsp peanut butter

4oz butter

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

2oz caster sugar

2oz soft brown sugar

6oz plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 180 deg C/gas 4.

Place butter, peanut butter, sugars and vanilla in a bowl and cream together. Add flour and baking powder and mix to form a firm dough.

Roll heaped teaspoon of dough into balls with floured hands. Place on lined baking sheet and flatten slightly with a fork.

Bake 14-15 mins to deep golden brown and allow to cool on sheet for 2-3 mins. Press a chocolate kiss or giant chocolate button into center of hot cookies and transfer to cooling rack to cool properly.

And there was even enough for a treat for James for looking after Sophie while I cooked!

He loved them (and he doesn't even like peanut butter!)

I didn't have any though, still being very good on Weight Watchers!!

Surf's Up!

I haven't ever made a secret of my MAC obsession, I must own thousands of pounds worth of this yummy make up brand!

Here is a small selection of my collection used on my wedding day!

I feel about MAC as some people do about shoes and bags, My MAC has never let me down! My clothes might not always look how I want them to but I can look however I want with the stroke of a brush!

On a recent shopping trip with Sophie and Mum I decided to stop by the MAC concession in House Of Fraser 'just to see if they had anything new'. I haven't bought any new MAC since I found out I was pregnant and, after spending lots of money on clothes for Sophie, decided I might treat myself!

And I did!

Surf Baby lipstick in Hibiscus, Lipglass in Strange Potion, Suntints Lip Balm in Pink Tinge and Silksheen Bronzer Stick in Tan-Tint

Perfect for the summer!!!

Grubs Up!

I know I posted about Sophie's food already but, as I spent the best part of Sunday cooking, I thought I'd share the fruits of my labour with you!

I already have a good stash of vegetable purees and had been giving the odd jar but haven't been impressed they just don't smell like actual food!

So I chopped, steamed, poached, whisked and blended my way through a mountain of ingredients and ta daa!!

Tomato sauce (courtesy of my Aunt)

Cheese sauce

Chicken with leeks, sweet potatoes and carrots

Braised beef and sweet potatoes

Beef casserole and fish in a cheese and vegetable sauce!!

Now I just have to get James to stop eating it!!!

A Little Taster.......

Just as I am changing my own eating habits, Sophie is having a change as well! My baby is ready for more than just milk. I had been thinking about weaning for a while and as Sophie's bottles got bigger and bigger and she began to demand feeding more often I began to worry as I had no idea what I was supposed to do!

I was lucky enough to get some great information from Victoria Plum about baby led weaning but wasn't sure Sophie would make it to 6 months on milk alone! The health visitors promote the 'no food till 6 months' policy so I have become part of an underground baby feeding gang of renegade mums!

Well nearly! At 18 weeks Sophie had her first few spoonfuls of baby rice, she loved it so much I had to make her more! After a few days I consulted Anabelle Karmel made her some baby purees to try some different tastes.

So far she likes everything except parsnip. Her favourite food, though, Is anything Daddy is eating! Yesterday I found them sitting on the floor sharing a banana!

I'll be spending the weekend cooking!

Time To Make A Change....

Yes folks It's that time, the time that comes in all new Mums lives. It's time I really have to think about shifting some of the extra weight I'm carrying around with me!

I'd love to call it baby weight but its not, Its me! I lost the 2 and a half stones I put on with Sophie within the first 4 weeks but, more and more, meeting up with friends involved lunches out, cake (or both) and lots of lattes!

I have always struggled with my weight, dieting, starving, binging, loosing weight, putting it on I'm actually bored of it!

I was following one such stupid diet (begins with an A) and had lived off cottage cheese and cucumber the week before we discovered I was pregnant! I was so disappointed that my weight meant I was classed as a high risk pregnancy and felt so guilty when I developed gestational diabetes that I swore I would deal with my weight once and for all after our baby was born. (injecting yourself with insulin and stabbing your fingers 5 times a day is a horrible experience!)

So here I am, Sophie is nearly 20 weeks old, I am healed and she is more often than not sleeping through so I feel human again. Well enough to fulfill my promise to myself (and my family!) with a little help from an old friend!

I was going to go it alone following the old point system but then decided it would be a good Idea to have a fresh start, new plan, new me, forget the past and just go for it!

Thursday saw me join Weight Watchers Online so I'm 4 days in and getting my head round the new point values and exploring the site!

My friend, Mummy of twins and cake eating partner in crime Liz has started the plan today too!

I hope you don't mind if I share my journey with updates now and again?

A completely disposable picnic set! Ok so Its not that eco friendly but its really pretty!

No more washing up, or dealing with the inevitable mess when you ~~can't be bothered~~ forget to wash your containers untill the next day!

At £15 it's not something I would use every day though... what do you think?

Virgin Fizz....

On a recent visit to Lakeside James and I had lunch at Las Iguanas. The food was lovely but we were both loving the 'Virgin Fizz' non alcoholic cocktail!
I am a bit of an amateur mixologist (and pre baby have been known to partake of a few of my creations!) so decided I must be able to recreate this yummy drink for us to enjoy during the royal wedding!

Pop some ice cubes, a slice of lime, lemonade and a squeeze of lemon in a tall glass and then drizzle in some 'Bottle Green' elderflower and pomegranate cordial.

Yummy!

I reckon it would be even better spiked with a shot of vodka!

Much to my shame, during my maternity leave, I have taken to watching far more TV than usual. One of the atrocities I caught the other day was 'The Real Housewives Of Orange County'
I have now (much to my distress!) become intrigued with watching (from behind my fingers!) these awful, vain, backstabbing women.

I'm not sure why they call them 'real housewives' when they are soooo fake!

A Fairytale Come True......

I'm late in discussing THE wedding, I know, but can't let the occasion pass without comment!

James, Mum, Sophie and I spent Friday sitting around the TV in our pyjamas watching the fairytale romance of Prince William and the beautiful Katherine Middleton sealed with a perfect wedding!

I loved that, despite the fact that a certain amount of tradition and protocol that needs to be followed at royal occasions, the wedding seemed to truly reflect the young couple.

I think it is safe to say that the Groom driving his Bride from Buckingham Palace to Clarence House in an open top Aston Martin will be talked about forevermore!

It was certainly fun watching all the guests arrive and ~~criticising~~ appraising their outfits!

One of my favourites was Earl Spencer's Daughter, Kitty, who I thought looked amazing and really stood out in nude Phillip Treacy (her Sisters looked pretty good too!)

I have to give booby prize to Samantha Cameron! Lovely dress but where, oh where, was her hat?

A couple of sparkly clips do not a royal wedding outfit make in my book! That said some of the guests would have been better taking a leaf out of SC's book and left the hats at home!

After all the excitement we settled down to watch the highlights, munching on a special wedding lunch I whipped up (I made the sandwiches and that counts!)

And enjoyed a glass of virgin fizz!

I can't wait to read all about where you were on the big day!!!

Back In Time...

On bank holiday Monday we decided to have a family day out at Audley End House and Gardens.

Having been there before I knew it was an ideal place to visit with Sophie as it's really geared up for families. There is lots to see in the house itself (there are also guides in each room who are happy to answer questions) and the most gorgeous gardens to explore.

I headed straight to the gorgeous kitchens to ogle at the stunning period kitchen ware and scullery!

There is even a separate area for baking....Heaven!!!

Even better there were actors playing the parts of Cook and Scullery Maid! We were even treated to a demonstration of butter churning from the Dairy Maid! (even Sophie watched!)

We also loved looking around the Kitchen Garden, there were lots of varieties of fruits, herbs and vegetables being grown on site and I'd love to go back to see the fruit trees later in the year!

Sophie wasn't keen on the wind though!!

Baby Brain and Other Excuses!!!

Yet again I find myself having had an unplanned blogging break! What was I thinking eh? New baby AND time for myself????

When I haven't been looking after Sophie, time spent with James on our own is precious and switching on the computer just hasn't happened!

Sophie is 14 weeks now and is a very happy, content little baby!

She had a bit of a wobbly time when at about 5 weeks I became worried about her fussy, painful feeding and she was diagnosed as having silent reflux and given some medication that has really helped.

As you can see she is doing really well! (a little porker at 15lb 11oz!) and has even managed to sleep through the night a few times (until her pesky inoculations interrupted things!)

I feel like I have so much to catch up on, and am doing so slowly so please bare with me :)

I also have a lot to blog! Thank Yous, days out and home stuff to share, so I'm hoping this isn't a flukey 5 minutes!!

Around The House - Part two

The bathroom!

Like many terraced houses our bathroom is missing a window so I have always kept the tiles and walls white to make it as light and clean looking a possible!
The navy tiles were used to break up the white a bit but remain neutral (I think navy is a really classic colour)
Before the makeover I had used vintage 'hotel' themed accessories in navy and white (sorry no photos!) but this had got a bit tired and more importantly we needed a bit more storage to keep all our bits and bobs out of sight.
James really likes 'natural' images like pebbles and sand, so after a bit of thinking and a bit of shopping I had a vision!
A quick coat of white paint to freshen things up and here is the result! (sorry the photos are a bit yellow but the flash made everything too light and glary!)

Some clever storage.....

and some artwork, pretties (lavender heart from Vintage Amethyst!) and some new linens in shades of grey taupe and putty were all that we needed to get a really different look!

I hope you enjoyed a look at my bathroom now if you don't mind I need to jump in the shower ;)

A First Date...

I thought I'd share some photos of Sophie and her friend Caleb!

(Please excuse the awful photo, my pregnancy puffiness had not gone yet!)

Caleb is the 8 week old Son of my friend Kelly, who, you may remember I went to Egypt with back in May (click here to see the post!) when we were both unaware we were pregnant!
With just a week between our due dates we enjoyed sharing our pregnancies and making plans for fun activities when our babies arrived!
We were surprised when Caleb put in an early appearance at only 35 weeks.. Luckily he was a strong boy and despite being tiny he is growing well!
In this picture Sophie is 2 weeks and Caleb is 6 weeks, it makes us laugh that Sophie is bigger!

Judging from their matching poses they are sure to be great friends!

Around The House - Part One

Before Sophie was born I may have mentioned improvements we were doing around the house (so much so you were probably all thoroughly bored!)

I thought as you all suffered the dull posts (or just lack of them!) that I would finally get on and share some pictures of the finished results with you!

Back in November I promised to share some photos of our new bedroom with you so it would seem appropriate that I start there
I only have one 'before' photo (sorry) I still like the pink, cream and brown that inspired Victoria and I to refer to it as the 'Neapolitan' room, but was also happy to have a change (and let James have some input!)

James wanted purple and although Its a colour I would usually be a bit scared of we decided to just go for it!
So 3 days and a professional decorator later.........

Voila!

We chose new accessories to complement the bold colours. I just love the curtains and the fabby chair! (a total bargain at £60 from TK Maxx!)
We are really pleased with the result!

Charming!

After buying Pandora bracelets as gifts for my bridesmaids (read Victoria's post here) I, of course, decided I needed one too!
After spending months clearing, decluttering and organising the last thing I wanted at Christmas was to get more 'stuff', so when James asked if there was anything I did want, I knew exactly what to ask for!

Luckily James collaborated with Mum and Victoria and I did really well on charms too!
James bought me the 2 hearts, Mum got the treasure chest, cupcake and handbag and Victoria bought a 'best friend' scroll!

There's, naturally, a long list of charms I hope to collect including three of the beautiful birthstone range (to symbolise James, Sophie and I!)
Imagine my surprise when James came home with one of them for me!

The Krypton Factor....

Today I'll be trying to master Sophie's pram!

This Silver Cross 3D travel system seemed super easy when we bought it in September, but having taken it out of the box for the first time yesterday I couldn't remember for the life of me how to convert it from a pushchair to a pram or how to attach the car seat!

Thank goodness there is a demo I can refer to on line!!!

Once I have worked it out Sophie will be having her first outing since she came home from hospital

Oh Baby......

I can't believe Sophie is already over 2 weeks old, It seems to have flown by but I feel like she has always been here at the same time!
She is doing very well and has already put on 4oz and grown 3cm!
We had a few sleepless (and upsetting) nights when the brand of milk we were using gave her tummy ache but we changed to another brand and she seems to be doing really well on it!
All in all she is a really easy baby to look after (at the moment!) and with a face like hers she has us all well and truly wrapped around her little finger!

I'm feeling organised and able to make some time for the bloggging that I love, I have lots to share and have missed not being able to keep up to date with the goings on of my bloggy friends!
Hopefully normal (as possible!) service will be resumed!

For James and I this couldn't be truer!!

This New Years Eve we are not only preparing to welcome in the new year but also a whole new exciting life!
Yesterday I was admitted into hospital to prepare to have our baby by Cesarean section, today, New Years Eve 2010!
Our 'little' bundle of joy is not looking so little and after a thorough growth scan last week we were advised that, for both my safety and the baby's, we should choose an elective c-section.
I was hoping that I would have a chance to have her naturally and am a bit sad that I won't get to experience a natural birth but my instinct is to trust that the doctors' advice is the best course of action to keep our baby safe.

So very excited and a little scared I wish you all fabulous New Years!
Enjoy your celebrations and I'll see you all in 2011!!!!

A Room Of Our Own!

James and I have spent a lot of time preparing for the arrival of our little girl, we have decorated, cleaned, ruthlessly cleared out (mainly me!), fixed and adorned the house!
We are happy with the results and are as ready as we will ever be for our arrival!
(I may even give you all a tour soon!)
We chose to live in my house but during the last few months have amalgamated and combined tastes (and compromised!) and made our family home.

The only room we hadn't changed at all was our bedroom.
The thought of completely decorating was far too much to contemplate for us but I couldn't help feeling that we should have a bedroom that we had chosen together!

Then a friend told me that she had just had her house decorated professionally and was really pleased with the results!
When I mentioned it to James he was just as enthusiastic as me!

I know paying a decorator may seem a bit extravagant but we couldn't take any more on, and having done it I have to admit I would do it again in a heartbeat!!!

So after 2 days (where we didn't have to lift a finger!) we had a beautiful, professionally finished bedroom! (seriously it was like magic!)

I'm going to be mean and make you wait till next week before I reveal all as we are waiting for delivery of a few finishing touches!
I'm not so mean as to not give you a sneak preview of one of the paint colours though!

James chose 'forest fruits', a far cry from my usual choice of pastels!
I love it!!!

Cakes For The Boys!

Having gestational diabetes doesn't mean I can't indulge my love of baking!
Luckily for me James' workmates are only too happy to assist in the eating part!
I'd been neglecting them lately so when they did overtime on Sunday I thought I'd make them a little treat!

James chose lemon cupcakes with lemon icing from the Primrose Bakery book (with added bling in the form of sugar sparkles and a touch of lime green glitter!).
I am ashamed to say that, despite having the book for a year, this is the first recipe I have tried!

According to my lovely 'testing panel' they were pretty good, but they need to try some other flavours to judge properly!!!

Life Is Sweet....

But not for me!!

I'm sure some of you have noticed my absence from our little world recently. hanks to everyone who has E Mailed, I'll be getting back to you :)

I've been taking a bit of time out after finding out I have developed gestational diabetes 4 weeks ago.

After beating myself up, thinking I had done something to harm our little girl, the diabetes midwife explained to me that this annoying condition is thought to be caused by my pregnancy hormones increasing my resistance to insulin resulting in elevated blood sugar. This, in turn, means that our little baby is making her own insulin to keep her sugar levels down which can result in her growing too quickly (as insulin is also a growth hormone)

James (as fabulously supportive as ever) and I have had to really concentrate on being as healthy as possible to control my glucose levels, analysing each meal and drink, walking as often as possible and remembering to test frequently. We have done really well, keeping my daytime levels within limits without the need for drugs! Unfortunately overnight I need a bit of help in the form of a little injection of additional insulin

At the moment things are working out just fine and after a growth scan I'm pleased to report that we seem to have caught things in time and Baby is well within the 'normal' range for her growth!
I am being well looked after, both at home and by the hospital, and am doing my very best to look after my precious load!

Apparently I'm in good company......both Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek suffered from the condition during their pregnancies!

Now I'm just hoping I can get into shape as well as them after Baby arrives!

The Kitchen Reveal

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that James and I were giving the kitchen a makeover.
I had thought it would be a quick revamp but, as we all know, things always take longer than expected!
We have been so busy I forgot to share the result with you all! Silly me! (if you need a reminder of the 'before' click here)

The entire kitchen was repainted, it really needed freshening up and perfecting the finish of the room took some time!

We painted white on the ceiling, coving and skirting and Laura Ashley Duck Egg on the walls, I love the colour!

We added some retro looking accessories. Metal wall plaques, a new, red clock and finally hung the fabulous shelf I bought from Vintage Amethyst to hang my CK mugs from.

James even put up the new light!!
I am soooo pleased with the result.
All we need is a new blind!

I can't believe It's October already!! but here we are, another month and another 'Show and Tell Sunday' hosted by the lovely Joe @ Josie Mary.

This months topic is 'one thing I would like to do before I die'
Wow! What a question! There are lots of things I would like to do before I die!

The most important to me is that I want to make sure that everyone I love is happy and knows how much they mean to me, I never want to regret not telling someone I love them enough.
I am so lucky to have met my gorgeous Husband and intend to enjoy every moment with our family.
I know this may seem a small thing but to me it is everything!

But that makes a very short post so I thought I would add a few more wishes!

James and I (and bump) would like to go on a safari to see animals in the wild! (I love giraffes!)

I would like to go back to Las Vegas

Take our baby to visit Micky in Florida

They were such a lovely surprise when we met up on friday!

There were loads more (3 layers in a gorgeous box!) but they were a bit yummy!!!

Aren't they great? T is so clever, they must have taken ages to make!!

She even made me some of my favourite shoes!

I really want to keep them and was thinking I could varnish them? Do any of you have any ideas on how I could preserve some to keep forever?

Good Enough to Eat Swap....

I know what you are all thinking! That was ages ago!!

Well yes it was! I signed up for this fabulous swap, hosted by Claire and Em, and then my life got a bit hectic!!!

My lovely partner Penny @ Planet Penny was fantastically understanding and patient with me and was pleased with her package (when I finally got it to her!)

I am long overdue in posting about the gorgeous goodies I received from Penny!
I was very excited, on opening my package, to find this beautiful box

The minty smell when I opened it was 'good enough to eat', look at all these goodies!

Penny had made me a perfect little felt teapot decoration and a lovely little felt heart brooch with teapot charm, I love it! Also she had made a mint scented coaster, which releases a great scent when a hot cup is placed on it (sooo clever!)
There was some mint tea 'teapigs' which worked wonders with my mild morning sickness (thanks for that Penny!) and some peppermint foot spray (which was a godsend on my painful, pregnant feet!)

Penny had obviously spent a lot of time and effort and put a lot of thought into my package, I felt thoroughly spoiled!!!!

Thank you so much Penny you were a great partner!!!

We certainly packed as much as we could into the weekend and were all exhausted!

Recently Victoria and I treated ourselves to a girls' day, getting our nails done and then a spot of shopping!

Home Sense is a treasure trove of loveliness, part of the TK Maxx family it has all the fabulousness of the TK Maxx home department without looking like a jumble sale!
James and I were discussing getting some decent, new towels so imagine my excitement when I spotted these!!

The Italian Job.....

I'm so excited, its only a week until our lovely bloggy friend Michela is coming to visit us!

The itinerary is a collaboration between Michela and Victoria and will definitely include a visit to Harrods (with its newly opened Christmas department!) a trip to Oxford Street culminating in the Mecca that is Selfridges (and hopefully dinner with the lovely T-Cakes!) I'm sure we will pop in to see our mate Cath too!

Obviously we can't let her leave without a trip to a proper English CS and a visit to Tesco!!!

Baby Steps....

I'm long overdue in telling you all about these beautiful little baby shoes my lovely friend Michela sent us!

aren't they cute?

She explained that it is an Italian tradition to give pregnant women booties as a symbol of luck for a healthy pregnancy and baby!

When we arrived on our honeymoon some dear Italian friends has decorated our awning with ribbons and bows and lots and lots of flowers and left these on the table!

Such a lovely tradition don't you think?

Obviously Victoria and I felt the need to add to baby girl's booming shoe collection!

Wet Paint........

Well the kitchen revamp is still going strong and I will be able to show you the finished room very soon!

Show and Tell!

Welcome to 'Show and Tell Sunday'!

Thank you to the fabulous Joe @ Josie-Mary for allowing me the honour of being this months guest host!

This time round I thought we could all share our favourite films (maybe even just to get your recommendations!)

I love films, I'll watch pretty much anything other than horror (because I'm a wuss!) but my favourites are so classically 'girlie'!

The first is a lovely film called 'August Rush'

If you haven't seen this then give it a try, I promise it will make you smile, cry, and, if you are anything like me, shout at the telly!
If you believe that if you just wish hard enough anything is possible, then this is the film for you!
I will be expecting a copy of this on DVD for Christmas as someone (who shall remain nameless!) has deleted it from sky plus!

Next is 'The Notebook' originally a book by Nicholas Sparks this film looses nothing in being translated to the screen. I love it just because I'm a hopeless romantic!

This film never fails to make me emotional (OK I cry like a baby!) I love the clothes, I love the story and I love the ending (which I won't spoil if you haven't seen it!)

I couldn't write this post without mentioning this film!

James tuned in because there was nothing else on last Sunday night, I was surprised that I'd never seen it but found it hysterical, I was laughing all the way through, definitely entertaining, if a bit mindless!

I could go on for ages but will spare you all my Berry Norman imitation!

I'm looking forward to hearing about your favourite films!

The Kitchen - A good start!

Well before the wedding I had planned to re vamp the kitchen, I bought all of the necessaries (which are piled up behind the sofa!) and then it all went by the wayside.....until now!

We are really getting to grips with the house, doing all those jobs, and finishing touches that you just stop noticing after a while (or they will drive you nuts!)
This weekend we are going to try to get the kitchen done and I'm really excited!

I thought I'd share a the 'before' photos with you today, ready to reveal the finished article with you!

I put this kitchen in about 3 years ago now and am still happy with my choice of off white cabinet with butchers block surfaces, I'm so glad I picked something classic and adaptable!
With such a small kitchen I have always kept it really light and, despite the re vamp, I do actually still like everything about it! I just felt that it was a little 'flat' and wanted to inject a little more colour and interest!
(oh and have a proper light, not a bare bulb!)

September Already?..........

I refuse to believe it's already September where has the time gone?

Once again I have been neglecting both my little blog and my blogging friends!
I've just found myself wrapped up in a whirlwind of work and trying to get things straight at home after the pre and post wedding chaos!

Apparently some of the most stressful events in a persons life is moving, getting married and having a baby, trust me to do them all at once!

My poor James moved his possessions into the garage in July and that is where they have remained.
We thought it was about time to get the house fully amalgamated to make a comfortable and organised home for our new arrival.

This, of course, means that it's time to part with the junk that seems to find its way into the house no matter how much I promise myself not to hoard!
It seemed sensible to clear out the clutter before we tried to bring anything else into the house so we started with the loft, a car full of rubbish and another car full to the charity shop and I'm pleased that we've made a good start!

I'm sure I'll be sharing our progress with you as we go along but for now I'll get on to something more interesting!
For some time now, the lovely Joe at Josie Mary has hosted a monthly event called 'Show and Tell Sunday'

This month I'm the guest host and have decided that I would love to hear all about your favourite films, what is your favourite film and why? (you can have more than one!)

Something Sweet.........

Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Continuing my wedding themed posts today to tell you about the cake!
(If I'm starting to bore you don't worry I'm nearly done!!)

No wedding is complete without a cake! We didn’t want to pay a fortune, I didn’t want anyone to have to go to any effort and I wanted something that could be cut and enjoyed on the day!

Good old Marks and Spencer came to the rescue with this little beauty!

We chose the sponge option with white chocolate fondant and roses (it’s also available in brown chocolate!), the best thing about getting a wedding cake from M&S is that even if the cake isn’t big enough to feed your number of guests you can buy extra cutting bars and they will never know!!!!!

I have to hand it to them it was really good value, a lot bigger than I thought and delicious, the roses were exquisite and it went with our theme perfectly!

Needless to say there was none left! Luckily James had thought ahead and had some sent to our room to enjoy with a cup of tea!

Yummy!

The break in blogging has thrown me out completely! I know I have missed several 'Happy Mondays' I am planning an extra special giveaway to make up to you all!!!

A splash of colour.......

As promised yesterday I thought I would tell you about our wedding flowers, they may be considered a small thing but defiantly deserve a post all of their own!
Our wedding flowers were really important to me as they were the only source of colour in the whole day. I wanted vintage looking garden flowers in muted lilacs and pinks and lots of ‘dusty’looking foliage.
After contacting several florists I was starting to think I was talking a strange language (seriously you should see some of the photos I was shown!)

My Brother’s girlfriend put us in contact with a school friend of hers, Johnny, who was just starting his own florist business and after a 10 minute phone conversation I knew I had found my man!

I was so impressed I let him do his own thing along my theme and am so glad I did! We had so many complements and even the registrar said they were the best flowers she had ever seen and took Johnny’s card!

The table arrangements were placed onto huge, tall martini glasses!

The registrar table arrangement later went to the top table! The mantel arrangements were amazing!!

We gave the arrangements away to our 'special' people so that they could be enjoyed properly. Here is Victoria's family with their booty!

Vitoria's mum also took charge of my bouquet to try to dry it for me (I have to say I was gutted that it wouldn't stay the same forever!)

Don't they look pleased!!!

You Shall Go To THe Ball.......

So we found the perfect venue and I have the perfect ring! It was time to dress ourselves!

As we had very little time I wanted to pick a colour scheme that wouldn’t take much thinking about and what is simpler than black and white? We decided that everything other than the flowers would be monochrome. (more about flowers tomorrow!)

The boys, including my 9 year old page boy, had gorgeous grey morning suits hired from Moss Bros, My lovely friend Keith manages a store and he gave us his staff discount of 50%!!!

Next came the bridesmaids! As you all know I had asked my lovely friend Victoria and James’ Sister Sam to be my bridesmaids and wanted them to look really special!

I had been admiring this Monsoon dress for ages

I thought it would be perfect for them, luckily they agreed and the right sizes obtained (with a bit of phoning round on Victoria’s part!)

These shoes (chosen by Sammy on a fun girls day out!)

and some fab fascinators (we had fun trying on anything we could and wandering round the shop!)

We chose white for Victoria and black for Sam to complement their colouring (and avoid the whole uniform thing!)

Now for the moment I had been dreading…..my dress!

I know I should have been excited but I wasn’t (sorry) I had been dieting before the pregnancy and had lost about a stone and a half, then the weight loss stopped and despite a week of eating little other than cucumber, lettuce and cottage cheese when in Egypt (not aware that I was 6 weeks pregnant!) I came back 2 pounds heavier!

I had had awful experiences in wedding shops in the past, being made to feel bad for not being a size 10 (If they can reduce me to tears believe me they are awful!)

I was feeling really down about myself and was seriously doubting I would get anything nice at such short notice! Then we went to see Peter! Peter owns a family run company called Heartbrides and stocks wedding dresses from a size 10 to a size 36 and he is quite simply a genius (as are his lovely ‘ladies’ who help you dress and offer honest advice!) I let him pick out dresses that he knew would suit me and they all looked nice on!

I picked this one as I thought the beautiful detailing would go with our theme (and it looked pretty good too!) Peter fitted it really well (leaving room for my growing bump!) so it was comfy all day!

I wore it with black, sparkly killer heels!!!

I picked a veil and tiara but then decided that was far too boring for me and asked Peter to make me a SATC style fascinator….much more ‘me’!

I'll start at the very beginning........

My severe lack of posting over the last 7 weeks has meant I have neglected to share loads of exciting stuff!
I realise it would be a travesty not to share all with blogland but I'd rather not bore you (and myself!) telling you everything in one go!
I thought I would tell you about the run up to the wedding and honeymoon in bite sized chunks starting with the proposal!

When we decided to get married it wasn't really the most romantic event, finding out about our baby and planning the wedding so quickly meant that we kind of bypassed a proper proposal!
I'm not one for grand gestures (I find it really embarrassing!) but being pregnant and emotional I couldn't help but feel disappointed that he never got to actually ask me properly!
I shouldn't have worried, James had it covered!!
After a fabulous weekend away in Paris (don't worry I'll tell you all about it soon!) we went out for a lovely dinner. Half way through James took off the temporary ring I had been wearing to 'look at' I didn't even notice when he slipped a new one back on!
After he realised I hadn't caught on he said 'I don't like that ring, you better check that one out!'
I looked down and burst into tears! Well wouldn't you?

(excuse my lack of grooming, manicure required!)

After I stopped blubbing he asked 'well, will you then?'
as if I would say no!!!

I can't believe its been seven weeks since my last post, the time has flown and so much has happened!

Wonderful things that this time last year I could never have dreamed of happening to me!

I hope you will forgive and join me in a small backward glance today, not to dwell on the past, but to celebrate how far I have come in the last year!

Those of you who have known me from the start of my blogging journey will know that this is my second blog, the first lasting only 17 posts!
My first blog ended at the same time as my first engagement and reading this post I can still remember how sad I felt writing it. Despite knowing I had done the right thing ending this unhappy relationship I was very, very scared.
I will always remember the advice given to me by the lovely Duchess of Tea, she said:

'at times we are sad for an unfortunate event; however, if we only knew how this turn of misfortune will help us in the future, then instead of tears we will pop champagne'

I hoped she was right and now I know she was!
Now, one year on I could not be happier! I have a wonderful husband and we are expecting our first baby!

I know you are all eager to hear all about the wedding and honeymoon and hope that the posts from Victoria and Rosie P have helped ease the suspense!
Over the next few day's (or weeks!) I promise to fill you all in on all the details but for now I'd better be signing off as I have so many of your fab blogs to catch up on!

The Luck Of The Irish (And Scottish...Oh And English)

Our little bundle is going to be quite a mixture with Grandparents from Ireland, Scotland and good old blighty!

Luckily for us the Irish luck was with us when planning our wedding!

Unofficially we were thinking of getting married some time next year but decided to bring things forward when we found out about the baby.
In the circumstances we were, initially, more than happy to have a registry office ceremony followed by a meal and a bit of a do at a local venue with family and close friends.
But as we started making arrangements we began to become a bit disappointed at the prospect of compromising our ideal wedding.

Then my lovely Mum sent James this link!

Within an hour we were getting married at the lovely Parklands in earlyJuly!!!

Parklands is a 17th century mansion set in 100 acres of deer park and it's perfect!!!
I felt like Jane Austen when we went to have a look round!
Better yet we got a fantastic last minute deal and the on site wedding planner does all the work for us!!
After the booking was made we breezed through getting our suppliers, photographer, florist, invitations and cake no problem!
Next Mum and I went dress shopping and I found the perfect one in 40 mins!
And who said planning a wedding is stressful?
We really have been so lucky!
Is it any wonder we're smiling??

Hitting the Jackpot.......

Last week I mentioned some big news I would be sharing with you all and I think you have all waited long enough!!
I'm not sure where to begin as I'm not sure where it began myself!
I had been feeling unwell with tummy pains, general tenderness and nausea and we thought I had brought a tummy bug back from Egypt.
But then another thought occurred to James...........

It would appear that we bought far more back from Vegas than we initially thought!

It was a massive shock and unplanned but after an initial panic we realised that it's not unwelcome and we are so excited about our little surprise!
At about 10 weeks it's early days but I am already feeling better and looking forward to the next trimester when I'm assured this indescribable tiredness will subside! (please tell me this is true!)

Both sets of grandparents are excited and we are also looking forward to our other piece of news..........

We are getting married!!!!

More on that later, I need a nap!!!!

WOW! Sorry for the vanishing act ladies! The past 10 days have been some of the most exciting and scary of my life! Although I have been missing for a couple of weeks I feel like I have months and months of news to share and catch up on!!!!

I'm off on another holiday!

Destination: Taba Heights - Egypt!

this time with my friend Kelly, here she is......

Far from the hustle and bustle of my Vegas trip we are planning a week of total relaxation here (we have even planned a spa night!)
I'm going to miss James loads and I'm sure Kelly will miss her Boyfriend, David, but it will be nice to spend some time together too (and I suppose absence makes the heart grow fonder!)

Remembering Cath .......

'Candy Flowers' is one of my faves, its the perfect size for my lunch and a book and think (by Cath standards!) its a bit of a bargain!
As extra incentive I picked up these sandwich boxes while I was there!

They make me smile :)

Presents From America......

Look at these pretties Victoria brought me home from New York!
A Marc Jacobs mirror compact and a lipstick pen :)

I love them!
They also made me laugh!
Why?
Well there's a bit of a story about this mirror compact:

Marc Jacobs brought these out about 5 years ago, they were cool, affordable and like gold dust!
This of course meant that I was OBSESSED with getting one!
I finally ended up paying double plus postage to get one sent from the states (I HAD to have one you understand?)
I was proud when I got it and popped it in my bag, 3 days later the lettering wore off and I owned an overpriced plastic mirror!!!
We found it amusing and I was only a little bit heartbroken :)

You should have seen her grin when she gave it to me (we both have evil humour!)!!!! Cheeky!!

Today I am off out with James' family to celebrate his Sister, Samantha's, 21st birthday.

Tonight we will all be staying in a hotel and going for a nice birthday meal.
We have gone all out to make it a special one for her with a very special present all the way from Vegas!

As well as this Armani watch (I want to keep it!!!) we have got some perfume and make up bits for her to open. I'm really excited and I hope she likes it!
As well as this James has booked for the three of us to have a private skiing lesson at the Snow dome near Hemel Hemstead so am expecting to spend a lot of Sunday on my behind!
Of course I couldn't let the occasion pass without making a cake!
